Speaking of sandwich art, Brittney Powell made some Mondrian and O’Keefe sandwiches as part of her Low-Commitment Projects with Tae Kitakata. ”Making stuff happen with little time and energy” is a great philosophy for keeping art in the everyday.

My next piece may or may not be about making sandwiches in under 30 seconds with the correct portion of meat (3 pieces), cheese (2), tomatoes (3), cucumbers (4), onion (12), lettuce (small handful), hot pepper (7) while slicing the bread exactly in half without dragging the knife so that the edges of the bread won’t cave in. But then again, I might decide to make a pizza after listening to this song…

Soon Congress will be voting on SOPA and PIPA, both of if passed will enable the government to monitor and censor the internet for users and servers in the United States. Since the internet thrives on the exclusive freedom that it offers leaders of prestigious websites (Google, Craigslist, WordPress.com, Wikipedia, Wired, to name a few) have shut down for the day in protest. The fear is that, if enacted, these laws will remove jobs, stifle innovation, and raise the costs of doing business online.
I’m not sure what the answer to internet piracy is, but I think companies have already started to overcome those hurtles but allowing their content to be viewed online either for a fee or with commercials. And anyways, the internet is a force that cannot be stopped. Betty White hosted SNL because of the internet. The It Get’s Better Project can reach teens across the country because of the internet. The internet is a complicated machine that has started to take on a life of its own.
To close, I leave with a quote from Chuck Klosterman’s book titled Eating the Dinosaur:
“Technology is a more powerful force than the desire for freedom.”

I have been working on this for a while and finally decided to lower the key to put it a little more in my range.
On Monday, I met a cat named Mary and this goes out to her.
“Nothing’s that simple anymore. I just got tossed into this world that I don’t agree with, where everything drastically changes in an instant. It feels like thirty-six authors are somewhere writing my life.” –from Hotel Angeline (p. 126).

The quote is a nice meta moment from one of the 36 authors of the book (list of authors can be found here), which was written at The Novel: Live! a writing marathon of sorts held in Seattle. 36 authors took turns writing in two hour blocks to complete his or her chapter of the book after reading what had already been written. 100 percent of the proceeds from the event and book sales were donated to non-profit literacy causes in the Northwest.
The book is certainly worth a read as it wavers between different narrative styles while holding an even pace. I was wondering how the 36 authors would be significant to this book, a further purpose than just a writing exercise, and was glad to see that the writers were thinking about that as well.

This juried exhibition attempts to get us talking and thinking about our pain and the pains of others. Featuring works from national and international artists that explore the psychosocial constructs of pain, and the many ways in which we compartmentalize, portray and project this this collective, yet deeply personal experience. |
